Railway rails are made of high-strength carbon steel. In addition to the chemical composition of the steel strength is influenced by its micro and macrostructure. Improvement of steel strength at the microstructural level is achieved by means of high-temperature quenching. Macrostructural parameters, such as the absence of foreign inclusions, large grains and cavities, are controlled visually and by means of non – destructive testing-flaw detection.
Standards
GOST 24182-80 applies to the production of non-hardened rails types P75, P65 and P50, made of open-hearth steel. The rails are designed for laying on broad gauge tracks. This standard introduced to replace the state Standards 8160-63 and 6944-63.
GOST 8278-83 regulates tolerances limit deviations and other technical characteristics of steel crane rails special profiles KR70, KR100 and others. The rails are designed for laying on the tracks of cranes.
GOST 7174-85 sets the range on hardened rails type R50.
GOST 7173-54 regulates the production of rails type P43, used for industrial purposes.
The standard rail length is 12.5; 25; 50 and 100 meters. The length of the rails for the so-called” velvet ” track is from 400 meters or more. Reducing the number of inter-rail joints can significantly reduce steel costs-about 4 tons per 1 kilometer.
